Remembering Kyabjé Dodrupchen Rinpoche

Rigpa

It was with the deepest sorrow and sadness that we learned of the parinirvana of Kyabjé Dodrupchen Rinpoche on 25 January. He was truly one of the greatest masters of this era and a profound source of inspiration to Dharma practitioners all around the world.

For Rigpa and for Sogyal Rinpoche, Kyabjé Rinpoche was an invaluable source of guidance, blessing and support over decades. His vast wisdom and omniscience is incomparable.

Kyabjé Dodrupchen Rinpoche was among the most important Tibetan masters of this time, in particular of the Nyingma and Dzogchen traditions. As the fourth incarnation of Dodrupchen Jikmé Trinlé Özer, the heart-son of Jikmé Lingpa who revealed the Longchen Nyingtik cycle, Dodrupchen Rinpoche was the principal holder of the Longchen Nyingtik teachings.

In his monastery in Gangtok Sikkim he oversaw the care of over a thousand monks and he also has monasteries in Nepal and Bhutan. Dodrupchen Rinpoche was known for his quiet, gentle and unassuming demeanour, which was complemented by a tremendous presence. People would travel to Sikkim from all over the world to receive his blessing and spend a brief moment in his presence.

Kyabjé Rinpoche’s connection with Rigpa began as early as 1975 when he granted the empowerment of Rigdzin Düpa at Sogyal Rinpoche's request in London.

In 1989 he was present at Rigpa's summer retreat at Brunissard, France along with Dzogchen Rinpoche, Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche and Khandro Tsering Chodron. In 1991, he taught at Rigpa’s retreat at Chateau de Cassan in France, he was the first lama to bless the land of what became Rigpa’s retreat centre in France, Lerab Ling, he visited and blessed Rigpa’s retreat centre in Ireland, Dzogchen Beara as well as the new London Centre.

For Sogyal Rinpoche and the Rigpa Sangha, Kyabjé Dodrupchen Rinpoche was a crucial guide and support over many decades, and with his omniscience, he guided us continuously with divinations and advice.

At the time of Sogyal Rinpoche’s passing, Kyabjé Dodrupchen Rinpoche offered immeasurable support sending tulkus and monks to practice and perform ceremonies in Thailand, blessing Sogyal Rinpoche’s kudung personally in Siliguri, hosting practices in Chorten Gonpa for over a month and supporting many of the arrangements for Sogyal Rinpoche’s cremation in Tashiding - all of this was made possible solely due to Kyabjé Rinpoche’s kindness and blessings. This time also brought a very special bond and connection between Rigpa students and the monks and lamas of Chorten Gonpa.

We pray that all of Kyabjé Dodrupchen Rinpoche’s extraordinary achievements continue to thrive: may his enlightened activity reverberate for countless generations to come, and bring a never-ending stream of benefit to all sentient beings. And may his incarnation quickly be born, without any obstacles, for the benefit of the Dharma and infinite beings in this troubled age!
