The Rigpa Tibetan Calendar has been coming out each year since 1979, long before I had even heard of Rigpa and any Buddhist teachings.
When I first became involved in meditation courses and volunteering for my local sangha it was through the calendar that I discovered the Tibetan ways, their dates based on the cycle of the moon, and their double or missing days. There was simply no other way to figure out when the next Guru Rinpoche day was than by owning the precious calendar full of all sorts of information on Tibetan schools and festivals I knew nothing about.
As I grew to understand the lineage of Tibetan Buddhism more deeply, which as students we try our best to respectfully and gratefully follow, the more this little book we call the ‘Rigpa Calendar’ unveiled its value.
Far beyond being a ‘simple’ calendar, it is a bridge that links Tibetan Buddhism to us, it's western followers - and us to it. It honours the works of all the Tibetan Buddhist traditions who have made and held this Buddhist tradition we have chosen to follow until enlightenment.
It is what nourishes the link between what we try endeavour to establish here in the West for people to practice the authentic Dharma and the Tibetan Buddhist tradition that has so generously handed their most treasured teachings to us, untrained westerners.
Many Lamas have commented how important the Rigpa Calendar has become over the years. That if some lama appeared in it it was like a direct recognition of their work from the whole Tibetan Buddhist world. How did it come to that? Through the vision and hard work of many, and not the least Sogyal Rinpoche. Today it is the face of Rigpa to the Tibetan Buddhist world. It is our legacy.
The Rigpa calendar is our offering to the Tibetan Buddhist world. We hope it continues to make a small contribution every day to the spread and flourishing of Dharma in the world, for the benefit of all.
